Tracheostomy Suctioning: Safe And Effective Technique

To ensure proper suctioning of a tracheostomy, limit the procedure to a maximum of three passes. Each insertion should be performed gently, reaching no more than 10 centimeters into the airway. Withdraw the catheter while applying suction until resistance is felt, indicating the presence of secretions. Repeat this process twice more for a total of three passes, minimizing the risk of tissue damage and ensuring effective clearance of the airway.
