Sympatric Speciation: Post-Zygotic Barriers Dominate

In sympatric speciation, post-zygotic barriers are more prevalent than pre-zygotic barriers. Pre-zygotic barriers prevent mating or fertilization, while post-zygotic barriers hinder the survival or reproduction of hybrid offspring. As sympatric populations share the same habitat, pre-zygotic barriers are less likely to evolve due to the absence of geographical isolation. Post-zygotic barriers, on the other hand, can more readily evolve in sympatry due to the selective pressure to reduce the production of inviable or sterile hybrid individuals.
