Oceania art made its entry into textbooks in the mid-20th century, but only sporadically. In the 1970s, it gained attention with the emergence of indigenous art movements and the establishment of organizations such as the Aboriginal Arts Board in Australia. By the late 20th century, it was being featured in art education texts, particularly those focused on multiculturalism and global perspectives.
