Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas with a molecular weight of 28.01 g/mol. Air, on the other hand, is a mixture of gases with an average molecular weight of 28.97 g/mol. Since CO has a lower molecular weight than air, it is less dense and will rise when mixed with air. Therefore, carbon monoxide is lighter than air.
